How Recruiters Actually Use LinkedIn to Find You
Your LinkedIn Profile Is Part CV, Part Search Engine Optimisation
How recruiters really use LinkedIn to find you.
We don’t sit there scrolling endlessly hoping to come across the right person.
We search for you.
If your profile isn’t written in a way that helps us find you, there’s a good chance we won’t.
When I’m working on a role, I search using specific keywords.
For example:
“Sales Manager”
“Automotive Aftermarket”
“Buying Groups”
“National Accounts”
If those terms aren’t on your profile, you may not appear in the search at all.
From there, results are filtered by company, experience, location and other factors to narrow the field.
At that point, you could be one of hundreds, sometimes thousands.
So what actually makes someone stand out?
- A clear headline that explains what you do and the value you bring
- An engaging “About” section that outlines your experience and who you help
- Achievements backed up with numbers (for example, 'grew territory by 37%')
It doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to be clear and credible.
The people who are most visible treat LinkedIn as a live database, not just a social network.
A few additional points that make a difference:
- Add skills that reflect your industry and target role
- Post or comment occasionally to stay visible
- Keep your experience up to date
- Use a professional photo
If you’re quietly open to new opportunities, your profile needs to work for you.
Because you might be exactly what someone is searching for.
But only if they can find you.
If you’re considering your next move within the industrial or automotive aftermarket, it’s worth understanding how you’re positioned before you go to market.
